Man, I wish it was us making an announcement like this.....

CORPUS CHRISTI — By his own admission, Tim Lange isn’t much of a hockey fan. He could count on two hands how many Rayz games he’s attended over the past 10 years.

However, Lange is a father whose son Cassidy, to put it bluntly, is addicted to hockey. And that proved to be the impetus behind why Corpus Christi once again has a Central Hockey League franchise one week after the sport appeared to be put on ice permanently in the Coastal Bend.

“It’s certainly not a good investment,” Tim Lange joked on Monday after he became the Rayz’ new majority owner. “That’s probably my sole motivation — Cassidy Lange.

“I have interest in it because of Cass. In 10 years, I’ve probably been to a dozen games. Cass has to tell me what’s going on.”

Lange, whose main calling card is as the owner of LanCo Well Service, a firm that manufactures new drilling rigs and workover rigs, first became interested in purchasing the Rayz three months ago when owner Doug Frank expressed his interest in selling the team.

But his attempt to purchase the team fell through on two different occasions and after the league announced its roster of teams for the 2008-09 season without Corpus Christi, it appeared the hopes of Cassidy, 18, and other local hockey fans had been extinguished.

Tim Lange, a lifelong Corpus Christi resident, then stepped in on Tuesday, making what his attorney Brent Chesney called “one last stab” at getting a deal done. A couple days later, he and Frank reached an agreement on the sale.

“Actually, I thought I had some other people interested in buying the team, so theoretically, I thought Cass was going to have hockey without me. But they didn’t (get it done), so I didn’t have a whole lot of choice. There are some other people I know who have some hockey interest and they wanted their kids to have ice to play on. We just decided to go ahead.”

Congrats to all the Rayz fans!

I'm going to go have a good cry now because it hasn't happened for the Bats.
