The Texas Tornado junior hockey team will take a year off while its home rink is renovated.
The team's arena, housed in the same building as the Dallas Stars' practice facility, is undergoing an expansion of about 1,500 seats to 5,300. The renovation will include additional suites, new video boards and a new parking garage.
The Tornado compete in the North American Hockey League, a developmental league that produces some college and pro prospects. The Tornado have won four championships in nine seasons.
The team will return for the 2009-10 season.
"The expanded facility will give us the ability to better serve our fans, sponsors and players," Kirby Schlegel, chief executive officer of ownership group Schlegel Sports, said in a statement Wednesday.
Schlegel Sports also owns the Stars' minor league affiliate, the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League. _________________ “I’m so frustrated with the business. Alas, a facility that was deemed suitable by Austin's professional team is in fact too bush league for the Dallas junior team. If they wanted to share a rink with high school teams and men'sl leaguers they could just play in one of the other Star Centers.
CHL still wants to put an arena and team (presumably the Brahmas) in nearby Allen though, wonder if the expansion is also a preemptive move at that.
