That would really suck for both cities, and for the league. One of the things that makes this league work is that you can get people fired up about visiting teams from nearby cities. Ask the San Antonio team....it's hard to get people excited about playing the Norfolk Admirals. But Austin? They'll show up to see that. They used to, anyway. _________________ NHrow7 (1996-2006)

from channel 13 news last night
| Quote: |
| It looks like the Lubbock Cotton Kings could be in financial trouble once again. Today KLBK learning the city council's discussing a raise in the rent for the Cotton Kings' use of the City Bank coliseum. Last year the Kings paid $900 per game for approximately 30 games and the proposed rent increase could raise the bill to $3,000 a game but the Kings' use of the coliseum for practice and other activities would be included in the $3,000. By comparison, the City Council charges the Lubbock Renegades nearly $2,000 a game for their 8 home dates and practice is not included. Plenty more to come on this story tomorrow. |

The Lubbock Cotton Kings have narrowed their coaching search to 13 candidates including last season's head coach Craig Janney. Because of current lease negotiations with the City of Lubbock there's no timeline for a final decision to be made.
As for the lease the team tells us tonight they tried to nail down a long-term deal before the season was over but after multiple meetings an agreement was not reached. Now yesterday the city presented the Cotton Kings with a draft lease and they're currently reviewing it, hoping to finalize something soon...and hopefully...hoping to begin working on their ninth season in Lubbock. |

$900 a game is a pretty sweet deal. $3000 a game, not so sweet. But probably still below market rent if it's a nice enough facility.
Doesn't sound like they're about to fold if there are 13 people who want to be the coach.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for them. _________________ NHrow7 (1996-2006)

The Cotton Kings are Skating on Thin Ice
The survival of the Lubbock Cotton Kings is at risk after a new lease proposal by the city. The proposed lease agreement is three times what the team paid last year. But even still, city officials say they`re still getting a deal, but they`re just finished with subsidizing them.
The Cotton Kings aren`t just fighting with other teams, now, they’re fighting for survival.
“$30,000 was artificially low” says City Councilman John Leonard.
That`s what the Cotton Kings paid to rent the City Bank Coliseum last season. But folks at the city say they didn`t charge what it was worth.
“Some would say to subsidize them, help them get on their feet” says Leonard.
So now, the city proposed a new lease agreement.
“It is $90,000 dollars per season” says Assistant City Manager, Scott Snider.
That’s three times as much as they paid last year. Plus, they would have to pay for utilities, maintenance, and a new ice plant. The general manager for the Cotton Kings says that adds up to more than $300,000 dollars, for just one season. But the city says it’s only fair.
“We`re trying to be fair to make sure we give them a rent to include what we do for maintenance and make sure it’s safe” says Snider.
And to make it fair, the new agreement would allow the Cotton Kings to profit from concessions and any other ice event they sponsored during the season. Councilman Leonard wishes the team the best of luck, but says it’s time for them to take the reins.
“At some point, the city has to decide how much it can lose on an enterprise. As much as we want to help, it’s not really the role of government to interfere with private business” says Snider.
They’re still negotiating, but the Cotton Kings did say they’re looking over the draft and they do hope to reach an agreement soon.

email from a city councilman sent to a STH
its all but official now guess my only hockey fix next year will be on tv
FOR THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, THE COUNCIL HAS LISTENED TO THE COTTON KINGS REQUEST TO HELP THEM JUST "ONE MORE YEAR". IN SPITE OF OVERWHELMING OPPOSITION FROM CITIZENS, BOTH MINE AND THE PAST COUNCILS HAVE BENT OVER BACKWARDS TO ACCOMODATE THE COTTON KINGS AND TO TRY TO HELP KEEP THEM AFLOAT. IN FACT, JUST LAST YEAR WE DRASTICALLY CUT THEIR RENT TO ONLY $30,000 AND AWARDED A PERFORMANCE GRANT OF $150,000 TO HELP THEM "ONE MORE YEAR". IN THE '06-'07 SEASON CONTRACT, THE CITY LOST APPROXIMATELY $448,655 TRYING TO HELP THE COTTON KINGS "ONE LAST TIME". IT IS NOT THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT TO SUBSIDIZE PRIVATE BUSINESS OR TO MAKE UP FOR THE MONETARY DEFICIT OF A LOW FAN BASE. THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH THE CITY, IT IS WITH THE LACK OF PAYING FANS. FOR THE COTTON KINGS TO SURVIVE, THEY MUST HAVE MORE PEOPLE WILLING TO PAY TO VIEW THEIR PRODUCT. ONE MUST QUESTION EITHER THE VIABILITY OF THIS SPORT OF OR THE MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES OF THIS ORGANIZATION. IT MAKES YOU WONDER WHEN YOU HEAR THE AMARILLO TEAM IS FOR SALE ON EBAY. HOWEVER, STILL WE TRY TO HELP BY OFFERING A FAIR CONTRACT THAT INCLUDES INCENTIVES SUCH AS PAYING FOR NAMING RIGHTS WAY ABOVE THE STANDARD COMMISSION. I KNOW YOU ARE PROBABLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS NEWS, BUT I AND THE REST OF THE COUNCIL HAVE TO DO WHAT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CITY AND ITS CITIZENS!!
although i take anything from a city official with a grain of salt
Lubbock shitty i mean city govt is corrupt to begin with.
Just yesterday a woman was arrested in Lubbock working at a lingerie store for selling a "sexually explicit device" i didnt realize vibrators were illegal in Tx lol .
now if convicted this poor woman will have to register as a sex offender

From our local CBS affliate at 5 pm Thursday, May 24, 2007. There will be more on the late broadcast.
(ANCHOR) Brian Mudd: The Lubbock Cotton Kings may be shut out of a new lease agreement with the city leaders, leaving the team’s future on very thin ice. KLBK’s Rett Kleinschmidt here to tell us what’s gone wrong with the city.
(REPORTER) Rett Kleinschmidt: Well Brian, last ditch efforts made today to try and save the Cotton Kings franchise but all the king’s horses, all the king’s men, just not able to put the franchise back together again. Today the whole fiasco started this morning when the city sent out a press release stating no deal with the hockey franchise could be reached. After a few phone calls the Kings were given until 2pm to negotiate a deal with the city, and about 4pm today the city and hockey franchise not able to come to an agreement. The Kings would like a lease for at least three years but it seems the city only able to offer just one.
(COTTON KINGS GM) Todd Chisnell: … one of the other things we talked about $63,000 is what it would cost them whether the Cotton Kings were hear or not. Um, and so to us doesn’t…doesn’t sit well with us. If it’s going to be $63,000 whether we’re here or not why not do that for three years…
(MAYOR) David Miller: we actually our final offer was a one year deal with options to go to the second and third year. Quite frankly, with the work that’s being done on studying the coliseum right now and the life safety issues of both it and the auditorium we didn’t want to enter into any long-term agreements that we couldn’t keep.
(REPORTER) Rett Kleinschmidt: And so the Kings are going to continue to try to work this deal out. We’ll have plenty more coming up tonight at 6. We’re going to here from Rob Brennan who’s been on this story all day. If this deal doesn’t work out we’re going to talk about the future of hockey here in Lubbock. That’s all coming up tonight at 10.
