As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the FreeForums.org hosting platform, we will be performing a full network upgrade on Saturday, April 14th. This will include moving networks which will result in a 12-24 hour downtime while your DNS Cache updates.
I apologize for the downtime but the faster service and better uptime will make it well worth the downtime.
Thanks for your support.

After the last big outage, folks were unable to access the board. At that time, the freeforums folks gave us the following instructions:

Quote:
Go to Start and click RUN. Copy the appropriate information into the box.

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

You'll need to select a program to open the file. WordPad will do it.

Once you open the file, copy and paste the following lines below the info for your local host:

74.208.11.63 www.freeforums.org
74.208.11.63 forum.freeforums.org
74.208.11.63 unsportsmanlikeconduct.freeforums.org

Click on the save icon.

What they didn't mention at that time was that this was TEMPORARY FIX. Please make sure the lines are removed (using the above instructions) ASAP.

Hello,

In case you didn't read the news post, we'll be transferring networks next Saturday. I'm a bit worried that since some of your users have our site and your forum stored in cache (as per http://www.icebatsfanclub.com/UC.htm) they won't ever be able to access the new forum.

I would try and contact your members asap and make sure they have those lines removed from their hosts file by Friday.

More info on the outage:

We're hoping to start the transfer about 12:00 PM PST, depending on your ISP it may take as little as 2 hours, or as much as 24 hours.

For everyone who made the change to their host file you will never be able to access this site again from the computer you modified it on. Sorry I am worried that only 25 people have read this post. Shanny you might like my post and/or you might hate them, but really if someone put the changes in their hosts file you are pointing out they will never ever see this site again. The will be trying to get to the url that will no longer exist. I would suggest an email to all users telling them to contact you if they modified their hosts file.

Thanks for looking out for everyone, bandit.

I am assuming you're one of the folks whose email address was a fake one.

Otherwise you would have seen both of the mass emails sent to all users regarding this situation with instructions on what to do if one had made the changes recommended a while back...

I added those lines to the file a few weeks ago and haven't deleted them and I'm still here. Has the migration to the new server already occurred? If so, my ISP seems to have caught on without a hitch.

Delete the files before Friday (the migration occurs Saturday) and you'll be okay. If you forget or don't do it, you'll be up a creek.

If you don't delete those lines you will not be directed to the right site after they move it as your computer will always translate that address into the false old address.

If you never made changes, you should be golden. No problems for you.

If we have it saved as one of our thousand "favorites" we should still be able to access it by just typing in the original address. Right?. If that's true then we can just delete it as a favorite when the change takes place, manually type in the address, and then save it again. Tell me if that's true.
This high-tech computer stuff is pretty hard for me (we're happy we even have indoor plumbing).

Bottom line: if you added lines to your drivers/hosts, you must delete them.

If you never added those lines for whatever reason, you have nothing to fear.

MRice, BUG: did you add those lines?

Maybe there are advantages to being slow. I never figured out how to add lines which looks like a good thing. Fellow PC genius, MRice, did you add any lines?

Waitaminute....simple question....has the migration already occurred, or is it going to happen THIS weekend?

I added the lines to my hosts driver, never deleted them, and I'm still here....

OK thanks Shanny, that explains why I'm still here. I'll delete the lines. :)
