I'd pay that to watch them get swept.

On the contrary, I might be doing just that Thursday and I'm not amused. For 100 bucks I want a classic game in a classic series. Plus, I'm sure Risky would agree, don't want either team having another easy round when Habs-Flyers looks to be a war. But I figure it's still an almost once in a lifetime thing - the Garden (which is sure to vanish soon), Crosby, etc.

And just wait, those prices will go up next round. The Stars are an incredible bargain by comparison, but then so is an apartment in Dallas compared to Brooklyn.

How 'bout Zubie with the spin-and-whip tonight?

It certainly is amusing to see the Flyers expressing outrage over a cheap shot, especially one that seemed to be relatively mild.

It was also fun to see the Pens ready for Avery at the end of their last game. He was immediately mobbed when he threw that final slash.

The Pens were lucky when the whistle blew before what would have been the tying goal trickled in. It looked for a split second like Fleury had it, so it's hard to fault the ref on that one.

I have been very disappointed with the quality of the officiating in this year's playoffs, and I'm not speaking only of the Rangers-Pens series, (although it damned-sure would be a different series but for a ticky-tack call at the end of game one and a quick whistle at the end of game two).

Lots of silly calls even by new-rules-standards, and lots of non-calls. The video replay system is spot-on, best in professional sports -- but the on-ice officiating has been horrendous, IMO.

And hey, we can all hate Eric Lindros over a cold beer, right?

Congrats on the win tonight. Got a little dicey there toward the end. One of the worst playoff performances I ever saw by a goalie. Just awful. Makes me wonder if the kid isn't a head case for the rest of the series.

Price and the Flyers seem to be each trying to give games away.

Well Risky, you might get your money's worth. But be careful, if I were you I'd be concerned that the Pens will do to your boys precisely the same thing they're doing to mine. They're some kinda good.

Jagr had a monster game, and it didn't mean a thing.

Speaking of Jagr....more bad officiating. Did you see that goal the Rangers scored when Malone and another guy TOGETHER couldn't push Jagr into the net? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it was ruled a goal....but the REF NEVER CALLED IT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. WTF did he plan to do if the video was inconclusive?

It's one thing to have a great video replay system. It's another thing to abdicate the officiating to the replay system. You've GOT to make a call, right or wrong. And you've got to use the video to support or overturn the call that's made on the ice. When NO CALL is made on the ice, that's a formula for disaster.

Meanwhile, out in the real world, we had a Texas State Trooper murdered tonight in Kellyville, about 135 miles east of Dallas. Please remember the Trooper and his family and his Department in your prayers.

Update: Texas State Trooper James Scott Burns, a 2002 graduate of the Texas DPS Academy, was 39 years of age. He is survived by his wife and five-month old child.

His murderer remains at large. DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange said law enforcement officers are looking for Brandon Wayne Robertson, 37. Mr. Robertson was last seen driving a 1997 blue Dodge Intrepid with Texas license 039-LCG. Please dial 911 if you see this man or this vehicle.

Given the season we had last year and even the ups and downs of this one, I'd just be grateful for the opportunity.

Of course you know if Pittsburgh somehow makes it to the final with a 12-0 record they will fold in a tough series with Detroit or Dallas.

Sean Avery played two periods of hockey with a lacerated spleen.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The New York Rangers said forward Sean Avery suffered a lacerated spleen in Tuesday night's Stanley Cup playoff game and will be lost for the remainder of the playoffs.

The team also denied a published report in the New York Daily News -- which first reported Avery's hospitalization -- that the forward had been taken to a Manhattan hospital while unconscious and in cardiac arrest.

The Rangers said Avery was admitted to St. Vincent's Medical Center following a CT scan and is expected to make a full recovery. Avery walked into the medical facility with team doctor Andrew Feldman, and the two took a car to the hospital, not an emergency vehicle, the team said.

Michael Fagan, spokesman for St. Vincent's Medical Center, said Avery is in "stable" condition.

Tuesday night, the Rangers lost 5-3 in the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden. The Penguins took a 3-0 series lead with the win.

Avery suffered the injury as the result of a hit during the game, spokesman John Rosasco told reporters during the team's morning workout.

"He walked into the hospital," Rosasco said. "He was never in a life-threatening situation."

Avery's mother Marlene told the Toronto Sun that the injury occurred in the first period as the result of a collision with a Penguins defenseman and that he played the remainder of the game in a great deal of pain. She said her son's spleen had not ruptured, but that he had suffered internal bleeding.

Avery played 14 minutes and 34 seconds of Game 3, taking 19 shifts on the ice. He finished the game before going to hospital, according to the team. He has seven points in eight playoff games this spring.

"We're definitely going to miss him," forward Ryan Callahan said after practice Wednesday. "He's a real big part of the team. He's come up with some real big points, scored big goals and obviously gets under the other team's skin.

"It's a tough loss to lose him. But we've got a lot of guys in here. Guys have to step up, and we have to concentrate on the next game." Avery, known for getting under opponents' skin with a chippy style of play, became a lightning rod for controversy during the first round when he tried to disrupt New Jersey Devils netminder Martin Brodeur by waving his arms and stick in the netminder's face. The unorthodox method of screening prompted the NHL to impose a new rule that warned similar actions by players would result in a penalty.

The spleen is an organ about the size of a fist on the left side of the body, behind the stomach. It helps the body fight infection and filters the blood. A person can live without a spleen, although he loses some of his ability to fight infections.

In his NHL time with the Detroit Red Wings, the Kings and the Rangers, he has elevated a knack of riling people into an art form. His targets find themselves mouthing off, or worse, getting so angered that they draw a penalty.

"On the ice, things always happen," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. "It's emotional and intense. Guys are not the best of friends on the ice, but you never want to see someone's health in jeopardy. I think we all wish him the best.

"He's a guy who brings a lot of emotion to his team. I think we are a good example, we learned from when we lost some guys that other guys step up. When you lose guys you push harder to be better. So I don't think any of us will take that for granted."

Avery has also had an ongoing feud with 41-year-old Penguins forward Gary Roberts, who has yet to play in this series. Despite his 21 seasons of NHL experience, Roberts lost his cool during a November game and took a 4-minute high-sticking penalty against Avery that led to a goal in a Rangers victory.

"A guy like that, they take it a little bit more of an insult after you disrespect them and all they've done for the game and how great they are," Avery said then of Roberts.

Roberts called Avery "an idiot" after his antics with Brodeur, but took a softer tone when told of the injury.

"There's hockey and then there is life and your health. You don't wish that on anybody," Roberts said. "I don't know Sean personally away from the rink. Obviously, we've had our comments throughout the media, but truthfully when it comes to this kind of stuff you just hope that he makes a full recovery."

Scott Burnside is a senior writer for ESPN.com. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I got a text around noon saying he was unconscious and not breathing. Couldn't check it out because of the g-d TAKS test. Was glad to hear it was the spleen and not what was initially reported.

Sorry to have to say this about your heartthrob and cybernamesake, but I've thought it was Mr. Shanahan who's been unconscious and not breathing for the first three games of this series. He's been invisible. Very disappointing.

I've been too tired and busy to watch any of the playoffs. That, and the purchase of a Wii.

You're probably right, jlocke. Maybe I'm just going cold-turkey with hockey period. Perhaps my subconscious is telling me that doing so will make the absence of the Bats that much less noticeable...Maybe I'm full of shit.
